Food Inked | The Patisserie Suite
Original, Ink on Cotton Rag (2026)
Food Inked began with a single question: Can you evoke the sensory warmth, butter, and sugar of fresh pastry using only cold, permanent black ink?
This four piece suite—The Croissant, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Glazed Donuts, and Macarons—is an exercise in tactile translation. Working with archival pigment fineliners on 300gsm Arches cotton rag, every surface is built through an intensive micro scribble (scumbling) technique. There are no diluted washes, white gouache highlights, or digital corrections. The light reflecting off the molten chocolate, the sugar glaze, and the delicate pastry crust is raw, untouched paper.
The process was far from sweet. It took months of compositional drafting and continuous, nocturnal hand rendering.
Mid way through the first croissant, the scale felt slightly too heavy for something meant to evoke lightness and air. Despite weeks of microscopic linework already on the paper, I tore it up and restarted from a blank sheet. In pure ink drawing, there is no erasing; you have to be willing to destroy the work to protect the integrity of the piece.
