Iconic James Bond Watches | The Horological Suite
Originals, Ink on Cotton Rag (2021-2022)
Before 2020, my practice was defined by speed, movement, and the outdoors—capturing the fleeting energy of travel through spontaneous urban sketching. When the world stopped during lockdown, I inverted my entire approach: trading loose, plein-air line work for the intense discipline and technical demands of monumental hyper realism.
Drawing directly from my time as a watch magazine illustrator, this series was conceived as a tribute to the relentless obsession of haute horlogerie. Watchmaking is celebrated for invisible craftsmanship—microscopic chamfered bevels, radially brushed stainless steel, and mechanical balance. Everyone recognises James Bond on screen, but I wanted the viewer to inspect his iconic timepieces through the loupe of a master watchmaker.
To translate micro engineering onto a monumental scale, each timepiece was drawn across a massive 101 × 152 cm sheet using fine Uni Pin pigment pens on heavyweight 640gsm Arches cold pressed cotton paper. The resulting three piece suite documents three legendary cinematic references: the vintage Rolex Submariner Ref. 5513 and two modern Omega Seamasters.
There are no white gel pens, gouache highlights, or digital adjustments. The brilliant flare off the domed crystal, the metallic sheen of the brushed lugs, and the sharp luminescence on the hour markers are all raw, negative space—the bare French paper preserved through hundreds of hours of controlled stippling and micro-hatching. The series became a meditative study in absolute patience, where a single misplaced line could destroy an entire month of labour.
